Opportunities for Special Enrollment Periods

5/14/2026 2:42:47 PM

We would like to remind assisters about a couple of less common seasonal opportunities for special enrollment periods (SEPs). These SEPs allow individuals to enroll in or change their health insurance outside the regular open enrollment period due to specific seasonal events.

At the end of the school year and during summer, two situations can cause a Loss of Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC), which is a qualifying life event (QLE) and can open a special enrollment period (SEP).

  1. First, students might lose their health insurance from colleges or universities for reasons like graduating, dropping out, or reaching age limits. This usually happens in late spring and summer.
  2. Second, some employers have health plans that don’t follow the calendar year, which means their open enrollment dates are different from those of MNsure. Employees might lose their MEC when their coverage ends in the middle of the year or if they choose not to take the coverage that matches their employer's plan year.
