Divorce, Legal Separation or Death
You may qualify for a special enrollment period (SEP) if you are a current MNsure enrollee and lose your coverage due to:
- Divorce
- Legal separation
- Death
Key Dates
- 60-day SEP begins: Date of divorce, legal separation or death.
- When you can enroll: During the 60-day window of your SEP, after we verify your qualifying life event.
- When your coverage starts: The first day of the month after your plan selection date.
Verification Documents
When you apply, the system will tell you what documents you must upload.
Be prepared to upload at least one of the following:
- Court order with the date of divorce or legal separation
- Death certificate
- Public notice of death (example: published obituary)
Documents must show that you (or your dependent) lost your qualified health plan coverage in the past 60 days. Documents must include the enrollee’s name and the date of divorce, legal separation or death.
Don’t wait—MNsure must receive your documents and have time to process them before you can pick a plan. You must select a plan before your 60-day SEP window expires.
