Change Your Coverage
Federal rules limit when you can change plans. Most plan changes must happen during the annual open enrollment period. That's why it's so important to review your coverage each fall and make sure it still fits your needs. How to Change Your Plan
During Open Enrollment
You can change plans as many times as you want during the open enrollment period.
It's fast and easy to change plans online. Sign in to your MNsure account and navigate to the My Enrollments page. Use the "Change Plans" button to select a new plan.
Outside of Open Enrollment
When life changes, your coverage should keep up.
People start and stop jobs. Families move. Kids grow up and leave the nest. Your current plan may not be the right fit after a big life change.
The good news? If you experience a major milestone, you might qualify for a special enrollment period (SEP). This lets you change your current plan now. You don't have to wait for the next open enrollment period.
Examples of life changes:
- Losing your current health insurance
- Moving to Minnesota
- Family is growing or getting smaller
- Citizenship or immigration status changes
Use the "Edit Application" button in your MNsure account to report any changes as they happen. This way, you'll always have accurate information about whether you qualify for a SEP.
You might get a special enrollment period
Missed the open enrollment deadline? You may still be able to change your plan or enroll in new coverage if you experience a qualifying life event.
Most life changes give you a 60-day window to sign up for a new plan. If you’ve had a major change recently, don't wait—check now to see if you qualify to shop for coverage.
Know Before You Change
- Money You Already Paid: If you change plans in the middle of the year, the money you already paid toward your deductibles and out-of-pocket maximum usually starts over at $0 with the new plan.
- Automatic Payments: If you switch to a new insurance company, you must tell your old company to stop taking automatic payments from your bank account. They may need advance notice to stop the withdrawals.
Common Questions
What if I want to change plans after completing my enrollment?
